We have extensive experience of healing spaces, designing assisted living facilities for both private and municipal clients. In these projects we are used to looking after the needs of individuals, whether they be caregivers, administrators, or residents. An assisted living apartment must feel to the resident like a home, even if it is somewhat smaller than where they lived previously. There must be room for personal items for the eye to rest upon, opportunity for private conversation, and a feeling of freedom and dignity. To stimulate activity in everyday life, various kinds of shared environments are spread around the facility to meet the residents’ needs and energize the place. Architecture should think long-term and contribute to flexibility to ensure the care of tomorrow. The outdoor environment is a place for relaxation and sensory impressions. The scents of vegetation and the play of colors in perennials and plantings offer stimuli. Nature is stimulating, makes visible the changing seasons, and recalls memories of gardens past. The environment in an assisted living facility must be a highly functional and safe workplace equipped with modern quality-of-life technologies.
